Marta Moran Bishop has crafted a very special story in the telling of Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal.
Though it was the author’s intent to raise consciousness about the inhumane practice of breeding horses so that the mare is able to nourish a high-dollar mare’s foal, she does so much more.
In the telling of this story from Dinky’s point of view, the reader is immediately connected with this brand new life from the day he is born. He has only a few days with his mother, who teaches him as much as she can and then is taken away to a world he doesn’t understand. The story is so touching and heartbreaking. We want to comfort his fears when he wonders what will become of him. We rejoice when Marta and Ken adopt the lovable Dinky.
Dinky: The Nurse Mare’s Foal successfully sheds light on man’s inhumanity to horses, but this book goes way beyond that. For the most part, it is a delightful coming-of-age story of a horse. Through her very realistic interpretation, Moran Bishop brings Dinky into our hearts.
While I am an animal lover, I have never known much about horses, but this book had me completely charmed. I learned so much. It is beautifully and compassionately written and serves to teach people of all ages to understand and love horses.
