MacFarlane is a great story teller. I was transported back in time to Scotland during the time of the Roman unrest. The practice and custom of that time of selling and acquiring humans as slaves are aptly depicted. It's unfortunate for the hero, Ualan, his time as stud slave to Caecilia, the Roman, dictates his life, even after he manages to escape, taking their son with him. Now not only did he have to fight the demon that plagues him through dreams, he has the Picts to contend with if he wanted to keep his inheritance.
The dialogue brings the story to life, placing the reader in the middle of the action, whether it be fighting the enemy or making love with his new wife. My heart goes out to Ualan, his trials were many, but in the end he triumphed with the help of his family and friends, and his beloved wife, Sorcha. Great period love story!
