Writing is Murder by Susan Lynn Solomon is a standalone cozy mystery in the author’s Emlyn Goode Mystery series. In addition to being a cozy mystery, there is a paranormal aspect to the story as Emlyn Goode is a descendent of a purported witch.
I loved the rich details Ms. Solomon included in her descriptions of the area. The author vividly describes an area of New York with which she is clearly familiar. Her descriptions of haunted locations are bone chilling!
Emlyn Goode is a writer who happens to be dating the local law enforcement. She can’t help but become involved in solving some local crimes since her witchy senses frequently lead her to trouble. I loved the historical fiction aspects in Writing is Murder as well as the inclusion of Emlyn’s writing group.
The characters are all likable, and their banter is fun. Their relationships definitely gave a homey, small-town feel to the setting. The plot has a few intertwined threads that are all pulled together by the end of the story. Ms. Solomon has delivered a smart, engaging cozy mystery with plenty of clues and red herrings to keep her readers guessing until the end.

Although this time she finds herself engaged and getting her brother in law involved too. This novel is very well written, funny, and the characters seem unbelievably real. You can definitely tell the author Susan puts some of herself into every story and even Emlyn herself. I found this novel to be a quick read since I could not put it down! I’m already looking forward to the next of the series.
This was my first Emlyn Goode Mystery, but it won’t be my last! Author Susan Lynn Solomon has created a wonderful cozy mystery series, and this holiday novella is a delightful crash course into it.
When the police throw a Christmas bash, it is merry mayhem as everyone is surprised by the grisly secret Santa gift. Although her cop boyfriend tells her repeatedly to stay out of it, Emlyn Good tries to figure out the mystery. After all, where else will she get material for her next book. As the story progresses, readers get to know Emlyn, her family and cats well. While it is clear that the characters have, for the most part, been introduced and developed previously, Ms. Solomon presented her characters in a way that I felt I knew them.

Because she loved mystery. She was always watching shows like Murder She Wrote, Cagney and Lacey, and the like. This Emlyn Goode mystery would have fit right in. The meddlesome citizen, friends with the police, and seemingly better at solving murders than the pros are. It’s such a great read. It grabbed me on the first page and made me curious about the other books in this series that I haven’t read.
This novelette is well worth the read, and I highly recommend it if you like a good mystery. Hell, even if you don’t, pick it up. I’d bet that you would still enjoy this book.

Her imagination tends to run away from her at the drop of a hat. Unfortunately, she tends to meander down dark roads into the terrifying abyss. She’s lucky to have her friend Rebecca and her unusual feline, Elvira, to help bring her back to reality.
In this story, fasoltes are tempted and the past has returned to haunt the residents of The Falls. More murders. Are these cases tied to an unsolved murder from 42 years ago? How can Emlyn figure out what happened before she was even born?
I love the excitement and adventure found in this series. I enjoy following along as Emlyn pieces together clues to solve the mysteries. They are well-written clean reads. I look forward to the next case Emlyn comes across.

A novelette, BELLA VITA gives more of what we first discovered in Solomon’s THE MAGIC OF MURDER, a 5 star full length work that focused on a modern day witch coming to terms with her inherited powers. I sense that the author in her enthusiasm just had to share her down-to-earth character one more time before the follow-up to MAGIC releases. Thank you for that. BELLA VITA is a nice bridge between the novels. 5 stars
