Review of Chance by Carolyn Bowen

Chance is a gripping psychological thriller that takes the lid off the underbelly of Atlanta, Georgia, the various cultures at play, the sleaze, the Chinese mafia. Adding to the intrigue, the involvement of the CIA. Meet tough, no-nonsense lawyer Sydney Jones, her beefy bodyguard-lover Walker and washed-up rock star Roxanne who attempts to lure Walker back to her side and ends up accidentally dead for her trouble. I particularly enjoyed the complexity of Sydney’s unexpected and unwanted pregnancy.

The narrative has a strong forward drive that makes for very fast reading. Written in third person personal, the story flits seamlessly from character to character in a fluid jump cut style, an approach that takes a moment to get used to but works well. Bowen’s pastiche of character-led vignette’s adds to the tension, lending a sense of urgency. Sacrificed is the deep point of view of the contemporary thriller – this technique applies especially to psychological thrillers – and Chance is light on dialogue and long action scenes, again, key drivers of the thriller genre. Nevertheless, Bowen has deployed a narrative style that captures the reader and keeps them turning the pages until the very end. Well written with good plotting and pacing and enough intrigue and twists to keep you on your toes, Chance will keep you guessing, waiting for the pay off at the end. Recommended to those after a lighter read in the thriller genre. Chance will also appeal to those after strong female leads.

I am an avid reader of paranormal and I would certainly recommend this book. The story is an intriguing spin on fallen angels and demons. I can’t wait to see where the author takes these fallen angels and their soul-keepers. Along with Bass' soul-keeper Bree we are introduced to Bree's brother Sam and a new fallen angel, Hogart. The character development is handled well and a little more complicated in this book as the characters are faced with self doubt, PTSD and questions about their own future. More secrets and complications are revealed creating more questions and another mystery.

Format: Kindle EditionI can only think of one word. One word that best describes this book, its characters, and this story.Charming.This entire book struck me as so charming, I couldn’t help but think of my late mother as I read it. Why? Because she loved mystery. She was always watching shows like Murder She Wrote, Cagney and Lacey, and the like. This Emlyn Goode mystery would have fit right in. The meddlesome citizen, friends with the police, and seemingly better at solving murders than the pros are.  It’s such a great read. It grabbed me on the first page and made me curious about the other books in this series that I haven’t read.

This novelette is well worth the read, and I highly recommend it if you like a good mystery. Hell, even if you don’t, pick it up. I’d bet that you would still enjoy this book.

It’s all about love, in a deeply romantic, almost silly way. Don’t expect complicated plots, twists, and mystery on this love affair. I thought the author was clever enough to present the characters clumsily, but aside from that, I would’ve liked a bit more action. I am not a fan of the “tell don’t show” approach, and I felt the author was leading me into what to think about the characters instead of letting us making an idea of our own. It’s a sweet story for all those hopeless romantics.

The scenarios are just as imaginative but far less bizarre and creepy. The characters are more relatable, more like regular folk, who find themselves in extraordinary situations – but the twisty end is there: surprising, ironic, and oh, my!
Who among us hasn’t hoped to hit a big money payoff? Or felt the presence of a loved one who has passed on? Believe in ghosts? Maybe not, but how do you explain two “entities” in an eternal battle for male/female dominance shape-shifting before your eyes? Conversations on either side of a radio “Portal” result in an identity switch. There are Bad Seeds, a battered wife fantasizing a way out and driven to the brink, a Fairy Godmother (be careful what you wish for). There’s a stunning reminder to always maintain “control” while driving and watch out for that sculpture of a Desert Iguana.
I gave the book four stars because one of the stories is published in a previous collection, although it is an intriguing adventure. Pick up this final anthology and make your collection complete.

In Spanish Florida, Gabriella and Manuel have been enjoying happiness again since the troubles with the British and looking forward to celebrating Gabriella’s birthday, when once again there is the threat of war. A big party is planned and Manuel and Gabriella’s friend Sailfish of the River People is travelling back for it. On his way, Sailfish unexpectedly meets a beautiful but annoying girl. Reluctant to leave Meli to face possible danger alone he decides to accompany her.

Sailfish has secretly been in love with Gabriella for some time and desperately tries to hide it. The last thing he would do would be to hurt his blood brother Manuel. Can Sailfish find his own happiness with Meli? Will the English attack the town and fort?

There is much to enjoy in this story. Although a follow-on to Indian Summer this is good as a stand-alone.
An excellent historical romance easily worth five stars

I liked Holly and could see personality traits from several people I know wrapped up in this complex lady who is just trying to figure out love,life and the emotions that go with hardships, heartaches and times that are wonderful and make Holly who she is. The book is an emotional roller coaster ride that is a must read.
