“Joel and Slade have suffered both physically and emotionally after their time in the army, and they are trying their best to cope.” – Standing on His Own (New Beginnings Book 2) by Trish Edmisten

When his best friend decided to join the Army after high school graduation, there was no question Joel would join too. Best friends since kindergarten, the two of them did everything together, and this was no different. A routine mission changed their lives forever. Slade ended up paralyzed while Joel lost his leg. Joel never expected to live with one leg, but he wasn’t going to let it break him. Like he did with everything else, he adapted, and he accepted that he was never going to find love. Women might want to sleep with a war hero, but they sure as hell don’t want to live with and take care of one. That theory proves true until Courtney comes along. Beautiful, independent Courtney with her wicked sense of humor is the perfect woman for Joel. All he has to do is trust her enough to accept that he doesn’t have to stand on his own anymore.

His perfect match

In this second book of the New Beginnings, all the characters from the first book are back, and we get to see more of Joel and his best friend, Slade. Both of them have suffered both physically and emotionally after their time in the army, and they are trying their best to cope. This story centers around Joel and the girl he meets, Courtney. Their first couple of encounters don’t go well, but still, there is something between them, and Joel is determined to pursue a relationship with Courtney. This book delves into PTSD (which both Joel and Slade suffer from) and the difficulties living with it.

“I chose this rating because Ryanne Anthony’s writing is incredible.” – Honey Babe by Ryanne Anthony

There had to be something Kendra Atkins was missing in life, and Charles Ford knew it was nothing but him. The only thing he had to do was convince her that he was all she would ever need and that he felt that way since the day they met ten years prior, hours before she became his first lover… when he was twenty-two. In his twenty-second year of life, Charles Ford was still a virgin. Like any other man, including his identical twin, he wanted sex, but he wanted his first time to mean something other than getting inside a woman’s body. By the time she was twenty, Kendra had sex with two men and not with outstanding results. It was just about experience; wanting to see what the deal was about. She could take it or leave it especially since the men she slept with only wanted what her body had to offer. Kendra has never been in a relationship, and after her disastrous sexual encounters, she decided never to exchange personal info with the next man, any man, she slept with. On a beach in Florida, Kendra and Charles meet, and Kendra takes Charles’ virginity, and all they know of one another is the nicknames they agreed to call one another: ‘Honey’ and ‘Babe.’ No other names, no numbers, and no idea how to reach one another, just as Kendra wanted it. She wanted that as much as she would regret that decision later, specifically 10 years later when Kendra and Charles reconnect… and she has no idea who he is or what she was to him.

Squirrelly loves to play but doesn’t like gathering acorns for the winter. – Squirrelly by Mary Clark Dalton

Squirrelly loved to play. In fact, there wasn’t a squirrel around who knew more acorn games than he did. He loved to make all the other squirrels laugh, and that he did time after time. All his friends would say, “Squirrelly, you’re the funniest squirrel around!” What he didn’t like though was working to store up for winter. ‘I have plenty of time,’ he would say when his father would warn him winter was coming soon.

“I found myself breathlessly rooting for Griffin as he struggles to hide his identity, undergoes a transformation, all while protecting orphaned children and the woman he loves.” – Blood Master (Book 1 of the G.O.D.S Series) by Kirsten Campbell

The G.O.D. series must be read in order

It’s 2052 and Earth has lost two-thirds of its population to the Great War. Many more lives were lost to earthquakes, the Clover Virus, and the Death Plague. Years later, survivors were clumped into factions. Two of the factions, the Guild and the Brotherhood, have fought over medical supplies and food for years. The fight is coming to a head as manpower dwindles, and the struggle becomes one to gain numbers, even if said numbers are children…
Griffin Storm is hiding out in Underground Atlanta. He’s an albino man that can manipulate glass and crystal, and he uses his special abilities to raid warehouses and old buildings for food and supplies for the abandoned children that live underground. During a raid, he meets Tassta Vinetti, a resident of the Brotherhood fortress. He is taken to the fortress and chaos ensues as Tassta, her twin brother Penn, and her uncle, try to keep their new visitor and his untold powers a secret.
Griffin is the only survivor of the Guild’s deadly experiments, and they hunt for him because his survival will have dynamic consequences on the world. The Guild believes that Griffin will transform into a G.O.D., a genetically enhanced Omni-dimensional being with limitless abilities.
Will Griffin transform into a G.O.D.? Will he save the children of the Underground from their tragic life? Only time will tell…

Intriguing and suspenseful

A friend recommended this book to me, and I found it to be an incredibly exciting dystopian adventure. The characters are well defined, and there’s a lovely slow-building romance.
The main character, and Blood Master, Griffin, is complex and kind. Griffin is a survivor. Not only of the Great War, Clover Virus, and Death Plague but also of the cruel experiments from the evil Guild Faction.
I found myself breathlessly rooting for Griffin as he struggles to hide his identity, and undergo a transformation, all while protecting orphaned children and the woman he loves.

“I enjoyed this book enormously and highly recommend it to everyone.” – Left for Dead (Laura & Gerry Mystery #6) by Karen Vaughan

Things are really starting to heat up in the Fitz family. Gerry’s cousin and the best buddy are left dead after a beating. When the thugs responsible find out he didn’t die, the game is on to keep Pete safe until he has to testify. After finding a body on a mountain trail in cottage country, Laura helps a local police officer solve the crime while waiting for the birth of her first baby.

DELIGHTFUL MURDER MYSTERY

By M. Moran Bishop

Left for Dead by Karen Vaughan, is a witty and intelligently told mystery story. It’s the 6th in the Laura and Gerry mysteries series and a delightfully penned book.
It seems even pregnancy will not stop Laura Fitz from being a corpse magnet, as she stumbles yet again onto another dead body. While Laura is talking to the police, she receives a phone call from her hubby. Apparently, Laura’s gift or a curse for discovering the dead and becoming embroiled in the nasty affairs of the murder has rubbed off on Gerry, for he has found his cousin near death.

The Fitz’s have once again become entangled in murder, mayhem, the lives of others along the danger it entails. But, through it, all Laura remains her witty self. Gerry doesn’t fare as well as his love for Laura, and their coming baby upset his judgment at times. After all, it is difficult to be objective when the life of one’s wife is on the line.

Ms. Vaughan has another terrific read in Left for Dead. I enjoyed this book enormously and highly recommend it to everyone.
